Applied Neuromechanics Lab


The Applied Neuromechanics Lab seeks to understand how muscles, sense organs, motor pattern generators and the brain interact to produce coordinated movement patterns.

Research in our lab focuses on interactions between musculoskeletal biomechanics and sensorimotor control of lower extremity function with particular emphasis on the coordination of locomotion and balance. Our mission is to determine the underlying neuromechanical mechanisms of gait dysfunction and postural instability and to create novel interventions to restore function and enhance quality of life.

We are an interdisciplinary lab, spanning a range of disciplines such as exercise science, engineering, electrophysiology, neuroscience and performance psychology.

  • We are a dynamic clinical-research program focused on gait in Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders.
  • We have integrated our research equipment into the movement disorders center, allowing us to collect gait data on over 3000 patients.
